And they know when you are talking, a voice accelerometer knows when you’re speaking and works with a pair of beam forming microphones are used to filter out external noise and make the sound of your voice the main focus.

Optical sensors and motion accelerometers control the audio and engage the microphone, making it possible for you to use one or both AirPods. It enables AirPods to play sound as soon as they're in your ears.
